“You are in more dire need of a blowjob than any white man in history.”
Without a doubt, the best part of Good Morning, Vietnam is Robin Williams. A comedic force of nature, Williams is in top gear throughout this film. Need proof? Watch the legendary scene when Williams first goes on air. Some of the jokes are dated sure, but his delivery is timeless. Most of the supporting cast also deliver, Bruno Kirby in particular. Sadly, the main “villain” of the movie is poorly written. What we get is a caricature, one whose sole purpose is to rally the audience behind Williams.
Most of the movie has a been-there done-that feel. Fortunately, a surprising plot turn and a powerful montage (that’s right, a montage that is actually good) mitigate the damage. Overall, the movie, and its comedy, is good enough. Watch it to see what made Robin Williams a comedic superstar, but there isn’t much else here.
